ABOUT THE EVENT

Letitia James’ career is marked by her fights for justice and for breaking barriers.

Letitia “Tish” James is the current Attorney General of New York. James was elected in 2018 and was formerly the New York City Public Advocate from 2013 to 2018 and a council woman serving the 35th district from 2004 to 2013. James has a history of public service, also working as a public defender, a staff member of the New York Assembly as well as being an Assistant Attorney General. Though James is currently a Democrat, she won her 2003 city council election as a member of the Working Families party, being the first person since 1977 to win as a member of a third-party.

James was elected Attorney General under former Governor Andrew Cuomo. As Attorney General she famously led two investigations regarding the former Governor, the first being an investigation into the State’s COVID-19 response specifically concerning  nursing homes and the second being the recent investigation into Governor Cuomo’s sexual harassment case for which he was found guilty and ultimately resigned. James investigation was extremely thorough and culminated in a report that was 168 pages, holding the Governor accountable and bringing forward the stories of women who were afraid their voices would remain unheard.

Prior to being elected, James challenged doubts that she biased in favor of Governor Cuomo who endorsed and helped elect James, by quoting a personal hero, former congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, stating “I’m unbought and unbossed”.

She recently announced her intention to run for New York State Governor in 2022.
