Mayor Mike Duggan (I-MI)
Can an independent win Michigan?
On Zoom, Wednesday April 29th from 3:20PM - 4:00PM EDT.
Mayor Mike Duggan joins us at a striking moment in one of the country’s most unconventional governor’s races. Running as an independent after three terms as mayor of Detroit, Duggan is testing whether a results-first, post-partisan message can break through in a battleground state that is tired of political trench warfare. And he is not running as a novelty candidate: recent Michigan polling has shown him anywhere from a clear third to effectively tied in a three-way race, making him not just an intriguing outsider, but a potentially serious contender in one of 2026’s most competitive contests.
Duggan brings to that campaign one of the most closely watched municipal records in the country. He served as Detroit’s mayor from 2014 through the start of 2026, helping lead the city through its post-bankruptcy recovery as Detroit posted a long run of balanced budgets, improvements in public services, declining violent crime, and a rare return to population growth. In 2025, Governing named him “America’s Most Effective Mayor,” a reflection of the national attention his tenure drew and the broader case he is now making to Michigan voters: that practical leadership still matters.
About our Speaker
Mike Duggan is a longtime Michigan public servant and executive whose career has spanned law, health care, and city government. Before becoming mayor, he served as Wayne County prosecutor and later led the Detroit Medical Center, where he built a reputation as a hands-on manager willing to take on struggling institutions and tough political environments.
Known for his blunt style and practical approach, Duggan has spent more than a decade at the center of Detroit’s civic life and has emerged as one of the most recognizable political figures in Michigan. That mix of institutional experience, executive credibility, and independence from the usual partisan mold is a big part of what now makes his statewide campaign so closely watched.
