Meet our Speaker

Richard Haass: A leading figure in the field of foreign affairs, Haass has served as President of the Council on Foreign Relations for 20 years. Prior to joining CFR, among his many achievements Haass served as an important advisor in foreign affairs and national security areas, as Special Assistant to President George H. W. Bush, as National Security Council Senior Director, as well as the Director of Policy Planning for the Department of State, and principal advisor to Secretary of State Colin Powell in the George W. Bush administration. He was U.S. Coordinator for the Future of Afghanistan, and the US Special Envoy for Northern Ireland to help the peace process in there, for which he received the State Department's Distinguished Service Award and the Presidential Citizens Medal for his contributions to the development and articulation of U.S. policy during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He is a best-selling author and author or editor of 14 books.

Now join us for a very special evening at the iconic New York Historical Society to discuss the first draft of that history, from the violent and deadly January 6th Capitol insurrection to the wider efforts to overthrow the 2020 election. We welcome Emmy Award-winning MSNBC anchor Ari Melber and former prosecutor and General Counsel to then FBI-Director Mueller Andrew Weissmann.

Ari Melber expounds on the foreword he wrote for the Harper Collins edition of the January 6 Report, now a #1 New York Times bestseller, and spoke with former prosecutor and Mueller General Counsel Andrew Weissmann about the findings, the case for future indictments, and the pending special counsel probe into Donald Trump. Both speakers will also took audience questions during the evening.

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:

Andrew Weissmann served as a lead prosecutor in Robert S. Mueller’s Special Counsel’s Office and as Chief of the Fraud Section in the Department of Justice. He was appointed by the Bush administration as Deputy and later as Director of the task force investigating and prosecuting individuals responsible for the Enron Scandal from 2002-2005. Weissmann served as a federal prosecutor in New York’s Eastern District for 15 years as the chief of the criminal division and has extensive experience in private practice.

He has taught at Fordham Law School and Brooklyn Law School and is currently a Professor of Practice with the Center on the Administration of Criminal Law at New York University School of Law. Weissmann is the author of Where Law Ends: Inside the Mueller Investigation, a frequent commentator on MSNBC, and a contributing author for The Atlantic and other publications.

Ari Melber, an Emmy Award-winning journalist, writer and attorney, is the host of “The Beat with Ari Melber” airing nightly at 6pm ET on MSNBC and founder of “Mavericks” on NBC. Melber also serves as MSNBC’s Chief Legal Correspondent and an NBC News Legal Analyst, reporting on law and justice stories across all NBC platforms. Melber received a 2016 Emmy Award for his reporting on the Supreme Court.

Before joining MSNBC, Melber practiced First Amendment law and served as a legislative aide in the U.S. Senate. He received a J.D. from Cornell Law School and is a member of the New York Bar. His writing has been published by The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Atlantic, and he is a former regular contributor to Politico, Reuters and The Nation. Officer Michael Fanone joined the Capitol Police out of a sense of duty after the September 11th attacks and spent 21 years on the Metropolitan Police Force before voluntarily rushing to defend the certification of electoral vote on January 6th, 2021. He has since testified several  times before Congress about the horrific events that left him battered and lucky to survive the heart attack he suffered that day. Now retired from the police force, he regularly appears on CNN as a commentator and has written the book Hold the Line: The Insurrection and One Cop's Battle for America's Soul about his experience.

Alan Blinder is an esteemed professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton University and a regular columnist for the Wall Street Journal. Blinder served as a member of President Clinton’s original Council of Economic Advisers and then as Vice Chair of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System in 1993–1996.

Blinder has written scores of scholarly articles, and authored or co-authored 21 books, including the best-seller After the Music Stopped and Advice and Dissent. His latest book, A Monetary and Fiscal History of the United States, 1961-2021 comes out in October.

Jeffrey Toobin is the chief legal analyst for CNN and has also worked at the New Yorker from 1993 to 2020. Toobin’s expertise on the Supreme Court stems from having reported and written about it extensively, including writing two books about the Court, “The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court,” and “The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court.” Before becoming a journalist, Toobin served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Brooklyn, and as an associate counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel Lawrence E. Walsh.

Kimberly Atkins Stohr is a Lawyer and senior opinion writer at The Boston Globe. Stohr is also an MSNBC contributor. She has served as the Boston Herald’s Washington bureau chief, guest host of CSPAN’s morning call-in show “Washington Journal,” and a Supreme Court reporter for Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly and it’s sister publications. Kimberly Atkins Stohr is a senior opinion writer at The Boston Globe. She is also an MSNBC contributor. Before launching her journalism career, she was a trial and appellate litigation attorney in Boston. Previously, Kimberly was the first Washington, DC-based news correspondent for WBUR. She has also served as the Boston Herald’s Washington bureau chief, guest host of C-SPAN’s morning call-in show “Washington Journal,” and a Supreme Court reporter for Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly and its sister publications. She has appeared as a political commentator on a host of national and international television and radio networks.

Brenda Feigen is a renowned feminist activist, film producer, and attorney who was one of the key figures of the feminist movement of the 1970’s and 80’s. She fought sexism at Harvard, worked on passage of the Equal Rights Amendment, coordinated the Senate testimony for the Equal Rights Amendment with Gloria Steinem, and testified herself. In 1972, Feigen left private practice, and she, Steinem, and Catherine Samuels founded The Women's Action Alliance which founded Ms. Magazine. In 1972, Feigen joined Ruth Bader Ginsburg in co-directing the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)'s newly formed Women's Rights Project (WRP). An interview with Feigen about this work is featured in the 2018 documentary RBG.

Carol Sanger writes and teaches courses on contracts, family law, the legal profession, and law and gender. Her most recent book, About Abortion: Terminating Pregnancy in the 21st Century, addresses the regulation of abortion and maternal conduct, surrogacy, and the law’s relation to culture. Since joining the Columbia Law School faculty in 1996, Sanger has been recognized for her dedication to students and teaching: She has received the Law School’s Willis L.M. Reese Prize for Excellence in Teaching, Columbia University’s Presidential Teaching Award, Social Justice Initiatives’ Outstanding Public Interest Faculty Member of the Year, and the Columbia Law Women’s Association’s Myra Bradwell Award for her commitment to mentoring female law students.

Rebecca Tong, Co-Executive Director of Trust Women, joined in 2013, after three years of organizing and directing grassroots political campaigns. Her experience in fundraising and legislative advocacy helped Trust Women to build a robust development department, with an emphasis on major giving and donor retention. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Illinois Wesleyan University in Political Science. After a brief hiatus in 2020 as Development Officer for The Land Institute, she returned to Trust Women to pursue her passion for reproductive justice and health issues. 

Dr. Wendy Chavkin is co-founder of Global Doctors for Choice and previously served as the chair to the Board of Directors of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health. In 2004-2005 she was a Fulbright New Century Scholar for her research on Fertility Decline and the Empowerment of Women, from 1994 to 2002 she was editor-in-chief of The Journal of the American Medical Women's Association, and from 1984 to 1988, the director of The Bureau of Maternity Services and Family Planning in New York City's Department of Health. She has written extensively about women's reproductive health issues, including the consequences of welfare reform for the health of women and children, HIV and illegal drug use in pregnancy, policy responses to declining birthrates, and conscientious objection to providing reproductive health care. She has received numerous awards from public health organizations for advocacy including the Jean Pakter and Allan Rosenfield awards.

During the Clinton Administration, Nossel was Deputy to the U.S. Ambassador for UN Management and Reform at the United Nations. During her corporate career, Nossel served as Vice President of U.S. Business Development for Bertelsmann and as Vice President for Strategy and Operations for the Wall Street Journal. Nossel published a book on freedom of speech, Dare to Speak: Defending Free Speech for All in 2020.

Daniel Kovalik is a human rights and labor rights lawyer whose most recent book, Cancel This Book The Progressive Case Against Cancel Culture discusses the cancel culture phenomenon that is sweeping the country. He served as in-house counsel for the United Steelworkers, AFL-CIO (USW) until 2019 where he worked on Alien Tort Claims Act cases against The Coca-Cola Company, Drummond and Occidental Petroleum – cases arising out of egregious human rights abuses in Colombia. Mr. Kovalik received the David W. Mills Mentoring Fellowship from Stanford University School of Law and the Project Censored Award. He is the author of several books and has written extensively on the issue of international human rights and U.S. foreign policy.

David Lat is a lawyer and former federal prosecutor who now publishes Original Jurisdiction, about law and legal affairs. Lat recently stepped into the cancel culture controversy with an article about a protest at Yale Law School. Lat founded Above the Law, one of the nation's most widely read legal news websites, and Underneath Their Robes, a popular blog about federal judges.. He contributes often to newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, Washington Post, and Wall Street Journal. Before entering the media world, David worked as a federal prosecutor; a litigation associate at Wachtell, Lipton; and law clerk to Judge Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. David graduated from Harvard College and Yale Law School, where he served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal.

Andy Campbell is an investigative reporter and editor covering extremism, misinformation, and their intersection with national politics. He is currently based in New York, where he works on the breaking news desk at HuffPost. He is considered an expert on American extremism, having covered the modern rise of the far-right at the ground level, including the neo-Nazi rallies in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017. His work is regularly cited in scientific studies and scholarly papers, and featured on network cable news and radio. Previously, he worked for The Brooklyn Paper and New York Post. Christian Picciolini is an anti-racism advocate and a former extremist who has spoken widely on how to prevent and counter extremism. He left the hate movement that he helped create during the 1980s and 90s, to make amends and rebuild his life. He became an award-winning television producer, public speaker, and author. In 2016, he won an Emmy Award for the anti-hate advertising campaign aimed at helping people disengage from extremism. Christian chronicles his involvement in and exit from the early American white-supremacist skinhead movement in his memoir, White American Youth. He showcased his disengagement work in a second book, Breaking Hate: Confronting the New Culture of Extremism, as well as in the MSNBC documentary series 'Breaking Hate,” which aired in 2018-2019.  The US has become more splintered along left-right lines than almost any time in its history.  Instead of joining the traditional parties, more voters than ever are opting to become independents - eschewing the parties that no longer fit their views.  

The Republican Party has already seen a hard split with more extreme views entering its mainstream and fewer moderate leaders in office.  Is the same phenomenon occurring in the Democratic Party?

About the Speaker:

Matt Bennett has journeyed from the campaign trail to the White House, and from the pages of The New York Times to appearances on Meet the Press and 60 Minutes. He worked on both of the presidential campaigns of Bill Clinton, his political hero. He served as Deputy Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs in the Clinton White House, where he was the principal White House liaison to governors and covered issues ranging from disaster response to Medicaid to immigration. Prior to that, Matt traveled with Vice President Al Gore on his White House staff. He was Director of Communications for Wesley Clark's presidential campaign in 2004, and from 2001-2004 he was Director of Public Affairs for Americans for Gun Safety.

In 2005, Matt joined his three fellow co-founders in establishing the Third Way, believing that there is a tremendous need for fresh thinking and moderate ideas in a time of extreme political immoderation.
