As the Federal Reserve raises interest rates to combat the highest inflation in 40 years, the United States falling into a recession is becoming an increasing concern for people. Increased inflation, the pandemic, supply shocks and global uncertainty from the war in Ukraine are threatening economic growth in America and could have long lasting effects.
Alan Blinder, former Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve, says he foresees a downturn coming next year. He reminds us of the rise in inflation in the 1970’s and the serious recession followed. Are we headed for a repeat performance? Or can this be avoided? Join The Common Good to find out.

Dambisa Moyo takes a look at the difficulties in the political arena and new economic challenges and offers solutions to jump-start economic growth by reforms for our democracy. All of this is part of her very provocative new book, Edge of Chaos.
In Edge of Chaos, Dambisa Moyo sets out the new political and economic challenges facing the world, and the specific, radical solutions needed to resolve these issues and reignite global growth. Dambisa enumerates the four headwinds of demographics, inequality, commodity scarcity and technological innovation that are driving social and economic unrest, and argues for a fundamental retooling of democratic capitalism to address current problems and deliver better outcomes in the future. In the twenty-first century, a crisis in one country can quickly become our own, and fragile economies produce a fragile international community. Edge of Chaos is a warning for advanced and emerging nations alike: we must reverse the dramatic erosion in growth, or face the consequences of a fragmented and unstable global future.
“Moyo’s book is provocative and of much interest to advocates of growth. Moyo clearly identifies systemic problems that the democracies-or what’s left of them-would do well to address.”
“An intriguing partnership of economic policy and political reforms for solving stagnating economic growth in the West.”
“Edge of Chaos gets seriously edgy”
Dr. Dambisa Moyo is a pre-eminent thinker, who influences key decision-makers in strategic investment and public policy. She is respected for her unique perspectives, her balance of contrarian thinking with measured judgment, and her ability to turn economic insight into investable ideas.

Creating a Great Economy: Lincoln’s Surprising Relevance Today
President Lincoln will be forever enshrined in the national consciousness for his moral courage in abolishing slavery. But economist and author Norton Garfinkle explained how this great president also has strong lessons for us today on how a great nation is built upon an economy based on shared progress. Garfinkle talked about Lincoln’s life and achievements anew through this important and refreshing lens – and show how Lincoln’s approach on the economy, from railroads, bridges, to commerce, are more relevant than ever in the times we live in today.
It is not just a prediction, but front page headlines and our new reality – the US middle class is shrinking and now makes up only 50% of our people. Our roads, bridges, railroads, ports and other infrastructure get a D+ rating by civil engineers. Income inequality is on the rise and a hot political issue. Creating broad-based prosperity, economic fairness, and opportunity can no longer be ignored.
