Disinformation, Lies and Media Manipulation

Join us for a special discussion with renowned editor and State Department official Rick Stengel and esteemed CNN National Security Analyst Jim Sciutto regarding the growing threat of disinformation in the world of politics and in the media.

As the longest-tenured Under-Secretary, Public Diplomacy, and Public Affairs in American history, Mr. Stengel has been essential in the State Department’s handling of misinformation and news manipulation at a global scale. On October 9, 2019, Mr. Stengel released his book, Information Wars: How We Lost the Global Battle Against Disinformation and What We Can Do About It, in which he discusses the intricacies and threats of political falsities. Rick Stengel also served as an editor at TIME Magazine for seven years and won an Emmy in 2007 for the TIME Documentary "Beyond 9/11: Portraits of Resilience."

Mr. Stengel’s unique experience in both the State Department and journalism while Mr. Sciutto’s National Security expertise, as well as his personal experience as an anchor at a major media outlet, will offer the Common Good’s members key insights into the ongoing global battle against disinformation. Richard Stengel is a writer, journalist, former Editor of TIME and Under Secretary of State for Public Affairs during the Obama administration. He led efforts to modernize the communications within the State Department and helped create the Global Engagement Center, the U.S. government’s only organization solely committed to countering propaganda and misinformation from terrorist groups to foreign countries. 

Richard Stengel helped Nelson Mandela write his famous autobiography Long Walk to Freedom and subsequently wrote a book on Mandela (Mandela’s Way). Currently, Stengel is an on-air analyst and MSNBC, a Distinguished Fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab. He continues to write articles for the TIME as well as other publications such as the New York Times.

Jim Sciutto is an anchor and national security correspondent. He provides reporting and unique analysis on topics ranging from U.S. National Security, to foreign policy, to the U.S. Intelligence community. He has also covered stories in China, Mongolia, Laos, Vietnam, Singapore, and South Korea, as well as covering the British hand over of Hong Kong to the Chinese government in 1997.

Jim Sciutto joined ABC news in 1998, and in 2006 moved to Washington D.C. to cover the Pentagon. Soon after he was named ABC’s senior foreign correspondent, and was the only American journalist to embed with U.S. Special Forces during the Iraq invasion. In 2008 he was selected as a life member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He is also the author of (Against Us: The New Face of America’s Enemies in the Western World), as well as (The Shadow War; Inside Russia and China’s Secret Operations to defeat America
